A Quick Guide To Indoor Skydiving

  • Posted on April 5, 2017 at 11:06 am

Indoor skydiving is an experience for those people that prefer to keep their feet on the ground and aren’t too keen on the idea of jumping out of a plane. Some people have an intense fear of heights; others are worried about how they will land after their jump so that is why indoor skydiving has been introduced. It’s the perfect way to experience the feeling of floating on air without having to jump from a plane.

Indoor skydiving involves using what is known as a vertical wind tunnel, the wind speeds in these tunnels can be anywhere between 80 mph and 140 mph. This wind speed provides enough strength to lift the body and keep it above the wind tunnel floor by a couple of feet. Many regular sky divers use these tunnels to practice their technique, alternatively people curious to try sky diving may take the wind tunnel to learn how to move in the air.

The popularity of indoor skydiving has grown in recent years but it originally was used for the military. In 1964 Jack Tiffany was the first person who decided to try out the vertical wind tunnel. By the late 1970’s a Canadian company was first to build a privately owned wind tunnel. The use of tunnels for fun hit quite a peak during the use of them in the 2006 Winter Olympics. More popularity arose also when a wind tunnel was used in the popular television show ‘America’s Next Top Model’ where a contestant had to pose whilst in the tunnel.

Currently there are two types of wind tunnel available, there are ones that are stationary and are used for indoor skydiving. These usually exist in a large building and can be booked by people to have a go guided by a professional. Other wind tunnels can be moved to different locations and used at different sporting events. If this is a sport that appeals to you, then before you enter the wind tunnel you will have to receive some training on how to deal with the pressure.

Overall all people of different ages and fitness levels can try their hand at indoor skydiving. The sport does tend to draw in those that are afraid of heights and would never be brave enough to try proper skydiving. However if you wish to prepare thoroughly for an actual skydive then it is recommended that you try indoor skydiving as part of your training. This is the closest experience you will have to the skydive and will prove very valuable.
